Eye on POY: New York volleyball

The window on the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year race is closing, and time is running out for student-athletes to state their POY case. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Allison Cappellino
Senior Outside Hitter, Penfield High (Penfield, NY)

2011 Team record: 39-4-3
2011 Team standing: Won Class AA state title

2011 Kills: 452
2011 Blocks: 21
2011 Digs: 381
2011 Aces: 84

Academics: B average
Collegiate destination: Undecided

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Class AA State Tournament MVP; First Team All-State; Monroe County Player of the Year.

Kendall Pierce
Senior Outside Hitter, Eden High (Eden, NY)

2011 Team record: 37-5-3
2011 Team standing: Won Class C state title

2011 Kills: 620
2011 Blocks: 22
2011 Digs: 725
2011 Aces: 93

Academics: A average
Collegiate destination: Penn State (recruited walk-on)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Class C State Tournament MVP; School career record for digs; First Team All-State in 2010, 2011.
