A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Tim Ball

THE BASICS

School: Piscataway (N.J.)
Grade: Senior
Height: 6-foot-2

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Ball raced to the state Meet of Champions title this past season with a time of 15:31. He also won the Group 4 individual state championship in 15:38 and earned victories at the Shore Coaches Invitational, the Old Bridge Fall Classic and the Section II Championships. He finished third at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional championships with a time of 15:47.6 and took 16th at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.

Academic excellence: Ball has maintained an A average in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of his church community, he has volunteered as a youth swim instructor.

THE PRAISE

“Tim’s an outstanding runner with tremendous talent, but he’s a team player first,” said Piscataway head coach Pete Buccino. “He’s a ferocious worker who led by example and had a tremendous impact on the younger athletes.”

THE FUTURE: Ball has verbally committed to an athletic scholarship at the University of Notre Dame beginning this fall.
