Eye on POY: Washington girls soccer

The fall soccer season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Girls Soccer Players of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Becca Schoales
Junior midfielder/forward, South Kitsap (Wash.)

2011 Team record: 12-4-2 (Class 4A)
2011 Team standing: Lost Class 4A state quarterfinals

2011 Goals: 13
2011 Assists: 6
2011 Points per game: 1.12
Career goals: 41
Career assists: 17

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: University of Washington

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Had a direct hand in 19 of South Kitsap’s 54 goals (35.2 percent). Scored a goal in the Wolves’ 2-0 win over Lake Stevens (Wash.) in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament. 2011 U.S. Soccer Under-17 Women’s National team member. No. 43 ranked recruit in Class of 2013 as rated by ESPNHS.

Isabel Farrell
Senior midfielder, Interlake (Bellevue, Wash.)

2011 Team record: 17-3-1 (Class 2A)
2011 Team standing: Class 2A state champions

2011 Goals: 9
2011 Assists: 14
2011 Points per game: 1.21
Career goals: 9
Career assists: 14

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: University of Washington

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Had a direct hand in 23 of Interlake’s 55 goals this past season (41.8 percent). Recorded the assist on the only goal of the Class 2A state title match as the Saints edged Cedarcrest (Duvall, Wash.), 1-0. 2011 U.S. Soccer Under-18 National Team member. 2011 Washington State Soccer Coaches Association Class 2A State MVP. 2011 NSCAA All-Region VIII selection. 2011 King County Conference Class 3A Player of the Year. No. 6 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.
