Eye on POY: Vermont girls soccer

The fall soccer season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Girls Soccer Players of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Lauren Bernard
Senior midfielder/forward, Colchester High (Colchester, VT)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Ranked No. 10 senior by ESPNHS; Burlington Free Press Player of the Year; Three-time All-State selection; Member of the U-18 Women's National Team player pool; NSCAA All-American in 2010, 2011.

Samantha Rock
Senior Forward, Milton High (Milton, VT)

2011 Team record: 16-1-1
2011 Team standing: Won Div. 2 state title

2011 Assists: 6
2011 Points per game: 1.72
Career goals: 69
Career assists: 29

Academics: A average
Collegiate destination: Undecided

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: First Team All-State in 2010, 2011; NSCAA All-New England selection; Lake Division MVP; Won three state titles in four years.
