Eye on POY: Oregon boys soccer

The fall soccer season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Boys Soccer Players of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Jaime Velasco
Senior forward, Westview (Portland, Ore.)

2011 Team record: 18-2-2 (Class 6A)
2011 Team standing: Class 6A state champions

2011 Goals: 30
2011 Assists: 18
2011 Points per game: 2.18
Career goals: 44
Career assists: 28

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: University of Portland

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Totaled eight goals and four assists in the Wildcats' five-game postseason run to the state title. Netted the only goal in Westview's 1-0 win over Grant (Portland, Ore.) in the state championship game. 2011 Class 6A State Player of the Year as named by The Oregonian. 2011 Metro League Player of the Year. 2011 Class 6A state championship game Most Valuable Player. Owns school record for goals scored (30). No. 150 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Dustin Munger
Senior midfielder, McMinnville (Ore.)

2011 Team record: 13-3-1 (Class 6A)
2011 Team standing: Lost Class 6A state semifinals

2011 Goals: 9
2011 Assists: 13
2011 Points per game: 1.47

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: University of Portland

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Notched three goals and an assist in the Grizzlies' playoff opener, a 6-2 win over South Medford. No. 67 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Boys Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.
