Eye on POY: Ohio boys soccer

The fall soccer season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Boys Soccer Players of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Andrew Souders
Senior midfielder/defender, Steele (Amherst, Ohio)

2011 Team record: 15-3-1 (Division I)
2011 Team standing: Lost Division I Rocky River District final (Round of 16)

2011 Goals: 12
2011 Assists: 4
2011 Points per game: 0.84
Career goals: 12
Career assists: 4

Academics: A average
Collegiate destination: University of Akron

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Led Steele to season records of 15 wins and 13 goals allowed. 2011 U.S. Men's Soccer Under-17 Men's National Team member. 2011 Division 1 First Team All-State selection. No. 8 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Matt Foldesy
Senior forward/midfielder, St. Ignatius (Cleveland, Ohio)

2011 Team standing: Division I state champions

2011 Assists: 18
2011 Points per game: 1.65
Career goals: 42
Career assists: 31

Academics: B average
Collegiate destination: University of Akron

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Scored seven goals and passed for six assists in St. Ignatius' seven-game run to the state championship. Had a goal and two assists in the Wildcats' 4-2 win over Olentangy Liberty (Powell, Ohio) in the state title game. 2011 Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Mr. Soccer. 2011 OSSCA Division I Player of the Year. 2011 NSCAA All-American selection. 2011 Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division I Player of the Year. 2011 All-American High School Game participant. No. 55 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Boys Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.
