Eye on POY: Nevada boys soccer

The fall soccer season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Boys Soccer Players of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Mike Tonetti
Senior forward, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.)

2011 Team record: 18-2-1 (Class 4A)
2011 Team standing: Lost Sunset Region semifinals

2011 Goals: 23
2011 Assists: 12
2011 Points per game: 1.84
Career goals: 42
Career assists: 25

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: Occidental College

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Recorded a goal and assist in two Sunset Region tournament games. Netted one hat trick and six two-goal games. Scored a point in all but two games. Had a direct hand in 35 of his team's 99 goals (35.4 percent). 2011 First Team All-State selection. 2011 Las Vegas Review First Team selection.

Ruben Duran
Senior midfielder, Eldorado (Las Vegas, Nev.)

2011 Team record: 17-1-1 (Class 4A)
2011 Team standing: Lost Class 4A state semifinals

2011 Goals: 30
2011 Assists: 23
2011 Points per game: 2.79
Career goals: 42
Career assists: 31

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: California Polytechnic State University

How he’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Totaled four goals and four assists in four postseason games. 2011 Las Vegas Review Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Netted a goal in all but two games. Recorded five hat tricks and two two-goal games. Had a direct hand in 53 of his team’s 89 goals (59.6 percent). 2011 Northeast League Most Valuable Player. 2011 First Team All-City selection. 2010 U.S. Soccer Residency Program. No. 53 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Boys Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.
