The window on the Gatorade State Girls Basketball Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Kahleah Copper
Senior Guard, Prep Charter High (Philadelphia, PA)

2011-12 Team record: 25-3
2011-12 Team standing: Begins Class AAA state tournament, 3/9

2011-12 Points per game: 20.7
2011-12 Rebounds per game: 16.6
2011-12 Assists per game: 2.7
2011-12 Blocks per game: 1.9
2011-12 Steals per game: 3.6

Academics: B average
Collegiate destination: Rutgers

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: McDonald’s All-American; WBCA All-American; Ranked No. 17 by ESPNHS; First Team All-State; Leading scorer, rebounder in school history.

Sierra Moore
Senior Guard, Delone Catholic High (McSherrystown, PA)

2011-12 Team record: 20-5
2011-12 Team standing: Begins Class AA state tournament, 3/9

2011-12 Points per game: 24.5
2011-12 Rebounds per game: 9.3
2011-12 Assists per game: 3.8
2011-12 Blocks per game: 1.2
2011-12 Steals per game: 2.9

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: Duke

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: First Team All-State; McDonald’s All-American; Ranked No. 49 by ESPNHS; Holds school, county and York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association career records for points scored.
