Eye on POY: Maine boys basketball

The window on the Gatorade State Boys Basketball Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Garet Beal
Junior guard/forward, Jonesport-Beals (Jonesport, Maine)

2011-12 Team record: 19-2 (Class D)
2011-12 Team standing: Class D state champions

2011-12 Points per game: 22.3
2011-12 Rebounds per game: 8.7
2011-12 Assists per game: 3.6
2011-12 Blocks per game: 1.6
2011-12 Steals per game: 3.8

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: Undecided

How he’s played himself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in four Class D state tournament victories. Recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 58-35 win over Forest Hills in the state championship game. Shot 61.5 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from 3-point range and 81.2 percent from free throw line. 2012 Class D Eastern Maine Tournament Most Valuable Player. 2011 and 2012 First Team All-Tournament selection. 2011 Third Team All-State selection as named by the Bangor Daily News.

Christian McCue
Senior guard, Hampden Academy (Hampden, Maine)

2011-12 Team record: 20-2 (Class A)
2011-12 Team standing: Lost Class A state final to Deering, 59-50

2011-12 Points per game: 17.6
2011-12 Rebounds per game: 2.4
2011-12 Assists per game: 3.1
2011-12 Steals per game: 1.2

Academics: A average
Collegiate destination: Undecided

How he’s played himself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 18.8 points in four Class A state tournament games. Scored a game-high 28 points in the 59-50 loss to Deering in the state championship game. His 17.6 points and 3.1 assists accounted for 40.8 percent of Hampden’s 58.3 points per game. 2012 Class A Eastern Maine Tournament Most Valuable Player. 2012 Mr. Basketball as named by the Maine Principals Association. 2012 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A North Co-Player of the Year. 2011 Honorable Mention All-State selection as named by the Bangor Daily News. 2011 Class A Honorable Mention All-Tournament selection.
