The Gatorade State Girls Soccer Players of the Year spring selection process is in full swing, and what better way to kick off coverage than with profiles of returning underclassmen winners? Repeating is no guarantee, but here's a snapshot of what this year’s challengers can shoot for.

Notes: 2010-11 Gatorade North Carolina Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Led the Ravens (18-2-1) to the 2011 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 3A state championship match. U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women’s National Team member. No. 21 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Extracurricular activities: The founder and president of Ravenscroft’s International Microlending Club, which gives out small loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries, she is a contributor to The Living Hand, her school’s literary and fine arts magazine, and she has volunteered locally with the Special Olympics and as a youth sailing instructor.
Rusty Scarborough, Director of Coaching for the Raleigh-based Capital Area Soccer League club program: “Caroline is very, very tenacious and brave. Technically she’s sound and she can play multiple positions. She understands the game so well.”

A dedicated ESPNHS POY team manages the Gatorade Player of the Year selection process and oversees all research, reporting, comparative analysis and criteria-compliance on the program’s behalf. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNHS recruit rankings.
