Eye on POY: California girls soccer

The window on the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Maya Theuer
Senior defender, The Bishop’s School (La Jolla, Calif.)

2012 Team standing: Lost in San Diego Section Division IV tournament second round

2012 Assists: 1
Career goals: 9
Career assists: 3

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: Stanford University

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 0.4 points per game this season. No. 16 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS. U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women’s National Team member. 2012 Coastal League Player of the Year.

Ryan Walker-Hartshorn
Junior forward, Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland, Calif.)

2012 Team record: 21-3-2
2012 Team standing: North Central Section Division II tournament champions

2012 Goals: 22
2012 Assists: 14
Career goals: 61
Career assists: 29

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: Stanford University (verbal)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 1.9 points per game this season. No. 34 ranked recruit in Class of 2013 as rated by ESPNHS. U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women’s National Team member. Amassed six goals and three assists in four playoff games.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.

Sarah Robinson: Sophomore forward, Gunn School (Palo Alto, Calif.)
