The window on the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Megan Gittins
Senior forward, Highland Park (Dallas, Texas)

2012 Team record: 28-1-2
2012 Team standing: Class 4A state champions

2012 Goals allowed: 29
2012 Shutouts: 18
Career goals: 70
Career assists: 47

Academics: A average
Collegiate destination: Princeton University

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Led a defense that allowed 1.5 goals per game this season. All-Area Most Valuable Player as named by the Dallas Morning News. 2011 First Team All-State honoree. Two-time First Team All-District 20-4A pick. Academic All-State selection.

Sophie Groff
Junior forward, Carroll (Southlake, Texas)

2012 Team record: 25-2-2
2012 Team standing: Lost Class 5A, Region 1 quarterfinals

2012 Goals: 35
2012 Assists: 13
2012 Points per game: 1.71
Career goals: 70
Career assists: 47

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: University of South Carolina (verbal)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 1.7 points per game this season. U.S. Soccer Under-18 Women’s National Team member. 2012 Class 5A First Team All-State selection. No. 79 ranked recruit in Class of 2013 as rated by ESPNHS.
