Eye on POY: Missouri girls soccer

The window on the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Allie Stephenson
Senior midfielder, Lee’s Summit North (Lee’s Summit, Mo.)

2012 Team record: 21-3 (Class 3)
2012 Team standing: Class 3 state tournament first round vs. Raymore-Peculiar on May 22

2012 Goals: 23
2012 Assists: 7
Career goals: 108
Career assists: 57

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: Oklahoma State University

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 1.3 points per game through her first 21 games this season. Three-time Class 3 First Team All-State selection. 2011 NSCAA Youth All-American honoree. No. 48 ranked recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS.

Savannah Trujillo
Sophomore forward/midfielder, St. Teresa’s Academy (Kansas City, Mo.)

2012 Team record: 16-3 (Class 3)
2012 Team standing: Lost District 14 tournament final

2012 Goals: 21
2012 Assists: 6
Career goals: 38
Career assists: 18

Academics: B average
Collegiate destination: HS sophomore

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 1.6 points per game through her first 17 games this season. 2011 Class 3 Second Team All-State selection.
