Eye on POY: Nevada girls soccer

The window on the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Kaitlyn Fahrner
Junior goalkeeper, Coronado (Henderson, Nev.)

2012 Team record: 14-2-4 (Class 4A)
2012 Team standing: Lost Class 4A Sunrise Region championship game

2012 Goals allowed: 9
2012 Shutouts: 9
Career shutouts: 35

Academics: A average
Collegiate destination: University of Oklahoma (verbal)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Allowed just 0.6 goals per game this season. U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Olympic Development Program team member. 2012 Southeast League Player of the Year. Two-time First Team All-Southern Nevada honoree.

Haley Wingender
Senior forward, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.)

2012 Team record: 17-3-2
2012 Team standing: Class 4A state champions

2012 Goals: 33
2012 Assists: 20
Career goals: 93
Career assists: 51

Academics: B-plus average
Collegiate destination: Northern Arizona University

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 2.4 points per game this season. Three-time First Team All-Sunset Region selection. Totaled two goals and one assist in state championship game. Two-time First Team All-Southern Nevada honoree.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.
