A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Softball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Riley Fisher
School: East (Des Moines, Iowa)
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Athletic achievement: Fisher led the Scarlets (39-5) to the Class 4A state championship last season. She posted a 23-3 record with a 1.10 ERA in the circle, while batting .325 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI. The 2011 Class 4A Pitcher of the Year, Fisher is a two-time First Team All-State selection and was named to the All-State Tournament team.
Academic excellence: Fisher has maintained a 4.02 GPA in the classroom.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of the Kiwanis Miracle League, assisting physically and intellectually challenged youth athletes, and has participated in the Scarlet Santa Program, providing gifts for needy children.
“Fisher has worked hard and become a game-changer for East,” said Kim Wright-Jones, head coach at Urbandale (Iowa). “She is definitely an amazing pitcher.”
THE FUTURE: Fisher has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball on scholarship at Iowa State University this fall.
