A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2012 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Alyssa McBride
School: Bryan (Ohio)
Event(s): Pole vault
Athletic achievement: McBride cleared a state-record 13 feet, one inch in the pole vault to capture the Division 2 state championship this spring, which ranked as the nation’s No. 10 clearance among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of her selection. She is a four-time District champion and also won the pole vault at the New Balance Indoor Nationals.
Academic excellence: McBride has maintained a 3.77 GPA in the classroom.
Exemplary character: Also a talented musician, she has volunteered locally on behalf of her church youth group and the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
“Alyssa is an amazing athlete with an incredible work ethic and focus,” said Bryan coach Melanie Reinhart. “The best thing about her is her humble nature. She doesn’t like the spotlight on her, but she deserves every ounce of recognition she receives.”
THE FUTURE: McBride has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on scholarship at the University of Cincinnati this fall.
