THE WINNER: Billy Stanley
School: South Park (Pa.)
Athletic achievement: Stanley captured the Class AAA state championship in the javelin this spring with a throw of 246 feet, nine inches, which ranked as the nation’s No. 1 distance among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection, and as the second-best mark in U.S. prep history. He also set a meet record while winning the javelin at the Penn Relays.
Academic excellence: Stanley has maintained a 3.73 GPA in the classroom.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of youth track programs and has assisted with charity dinners at his church.
“In my 19 years of coaching, I’ve never had an athlete who was more coachable than Billy Stanley,” said South Park coach Jeff Hufnagel. “He attained every goal he ever set forth for himself, and even more impressively, he did it in a humble way.”
THE FUTURE: Stanley has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field on scholarship at Ohio State University this fall.
