Eye on POY: West Virginia Girls Basketball

The window on the Gatorade State Girls Basketball Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Candace Brown
Senior guard/forward, Summers County (Hinton, WV)

2011-12 Team record: 18-7
2011-12 Team standing: Lost in Class AA regional final

2011-12 Points per game: 37
2011-12 Rebounds per game: 11.8
2011-12 Assists per game: 3.6
2011-12 Blocks per game: 1.6
2011-12 Steals per game: 7.4

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: Undecided

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Tied for nation's leading scoring average with 37 points per game; 2011 First Team All-State; 2011 First Team All-Conference;

Makenzie White
Senior guard/post, Scott (Madison, WV)

2011-12 Team record: 22-2
2011-12 Team standing: Will play in Class AA quarterfinals on March 7

2011-12 Points per game: 20.5
2011-12 Rebounds per game: 8.5
2011-12 Assists per game: 7.7
2011-12 Blocks per game: 1.4
2011-12 Steals per game: 2.7

Academics: A-minus average
Collegiate destination: West Virginia
