THE WINNER: Asia Dozier
School: Spring Valley (City, State)
Athletic achievement: Dozier led the Vikings to a 21-5 record and the second round of the Class 4A state tournament this past season. She averaged 18.6 points, 4.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 3.8 rebounds per game. A four-time member of the All-State team, Dozier was thrice selected to the Elite Five by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.
Academic excellence: Dozier has maintained a 4.34 GPA in the classroom and represents one of the state’s top academic candidates in meeting the Gatorade Award’s broad criteria.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of a children’s museum, youth basketball programs, and has raised money for cancer research.
“Dozier is a student of the game, and she does so many different things on the court,” said Steven Inabinet, head coach at Blythewood (S.C.). “She can take over a game with offense or defense.”
THE FUTURE: Dozier has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on an athletic scholarship at the University of South Carolina this fall.
