Colorado Softball POY: Rainey Gaffin

A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Softball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Rainey Gaffin

THE BASICS

School: Legacy (Broomfield, Colo.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Height: 5-foot-10

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Gaffin led the Lightning (24-2) to their fifth consecutive Class 5A state championship this past season. She posted a 22-2 record with a 1.74 ERA in the circle, while batting .591 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI. Gaffin was MVP of the Class 5A state tournament, a First Team All-State selection and the Denver Post All-Colorado Player of the Year.

Academic excellence: Gaffin has maintained a 3.37 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has helped created a reading program for local elementary school students and has volunteered delivering food to area needy.

THE PRAISE

“Gaffin is a very talented young lady with an obvious passion for the game,” said Jamie Dunn, head coach at Fruita Monument (Fruita, Colo.). “She’s a dominating force on the mound and in the batter’s box.”

THE FUTURE: Gaffin has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball on scholarship at the University of Tennessee this fall.
