A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Jasmine Jones


School: Bob Jones (Madison, Ala.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Wing
Height: 6-foot-2


Athletic achievement: Jones averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots per game while shooting 57 percent from the floor this past season, leading the Patriots (36-3) to the Class 6A state final. A 2012 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Game selection, she is ranked as the nation’s No. 39 on the HoopGurlz ESPNU 100.

Academic excellence: Jones has maintained a 3.07 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church community, she has volunteered locally as a youth basketball coach.

POY Potential: Top 5 Ala. football recruits

The Gatorade Player of the Year Program honors athletes who meet comprehensive and exacting criteria in high school sports. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNU's recruit rankings.
