THE WINNER: Charlinda Ioane

THE BASICS

School: Kapolei (Hawaii)
Grade: Senior

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Ioane captured the state championship in the shot put this spring with a state-record throw of 45 feet, 9.75 inches at the state meet. Named the Most Outstanding Athlete at the Punahou Relays this past season, she also placed second in the discus, launching it 128 feet, four inches. Ioane captured first place in the shot put (46 feet, 5.5 inches) and the discus (147 feet, five inches) at the Punahou Relays, which ranked as the nation’s No. 27 and No. 46 performances, respectively, among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of her selection.

Academic excellence: Ioane has maintained a B average in the classroom.

Exemplary character: In addition to donating her time to the Special Olympics and the Girls Scouts of the United States of America, she has volunteered as part of multiple community-service initiatives on behalf of her school and church.
