Vermont Girls Soccer POY: Lauren Bernard

A dedicated ESPNHS team managed this past fall's Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Lauren Bernard

THE BASICS

School: Colchester (Vt.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Forward/midfielder
Height: 5-foot-3

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Bernard scored 24 goals and passed for five assists this past season, leading the Lakers (7-6-2) to the Div. I state quarterfinals. The state’s returning Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year, she is a two-time All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and was chosen as Burlington Free Press Player of the Year. Bernard is a former member of the U.S. Soccer Federation Under-15 Women’s National Team, and a current member of the Under-18 National Team player pool.

Academic excellence: Bernard has maintained a 3.93 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally with youth soccer programs and camps.

The Gatorade Player of the Year Program honors athletes who meet comprehensive and exacting criteria in high school sports. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNU's recruit rankings.

That being said, the state's ESPNHS preseason All-State selections are sure to enter the 2011-12 Gatorade Football Player of the Year conversation at some point. Here they are …
