A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2012 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Conner Smock

Athletic achievement: Smock won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:26.13, the 3,200-meter run in 9:37.06 and anchored the first-place 4x400-meter relay in 3:35.48 this spring, leading the Lions to a third-place finish as a team at the Class 1A state meet. A three-time WaMaC Conference Athlete of the Year, he became just the seventh athlete in the 106-year history of Iowa high school track and field to win the 3,200 all four years of his prep career.

Academic excellence: Smock has maintained a 3.57 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: An accomplished tuba player in his school’s concert band, he is an Eagle Scout and has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with the Boy Scouts of America.
