Eye on POY: Missouri football

The window on the Gatorade State Football Player of the Year race is closing, and time is running out for student-athletes to state their POY case. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program's selection process.

Dalton Demos

Senior quarterback, Christian Brothers College (St. Louis, Mo.)

2011 Team record: 11-0

2011 Team standing: Class 6 state quarterfinal vs. McCluer North on Friday; Ranked No. 40 on the ESPNHS FAB 50

How he’s played himself into the State POY conversation: Scored four touchdowns in 2011 Class 6 state tournament opening-round victory. Owns a 161.15 NCAA Pass Efficiency Rating. 2010 Second Team All-Metro Catholic Conference selection. In addition to donating his time as a youth football instructor, he has volunteered on behalf of his church, as part of a holiday gift-giving campaign and on a service-mission trip to New York.

How he’s played himself into the State POY conversation: Owns the national prep career receiving yards record. Climbing the Top-10 list for receiving yards in a single season. 2010-11 Gatorade Missouri Football Player of the Year. No. 3 recruit in Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNU. 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl selection. 2009 and 2010 Class 4 First Team All-State selection as named by the Missouri High School Football Coaches Association. 2009-10 Gatorade Missouri Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He has volunteered local as a youth mentor and elementary school motivational speaker, and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church youth group.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Football Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011 campaign.
