A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Dawnyelle Awa

THE BASICS

School: Konawaena (Kealakekua, Hawaii)
Grade: Senior
Position: Point guard
Height: 5-foot-8

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Awa led the Wildcats to a 28-3 record and their second straight Division I state title this past season. She averaged 11.2 points, 4.1 rebounds four assists and four steals per game while shooting 54 percent inside the 3-point arc. A four-time Division I All-Tournament Team selection, Awa was named Most Valuable Player of the 2012 Iolani Classic.

Academic excellence: Awa has maintained a 3.42 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally as part of a fundraising campaign to benefit breast cancer research, as a youth basketball coach and referee, and on behalf of Disabled American Veterans.
