THE BASICS: Anatomy of a POY

THE PILLARS: Gatorade criteria

Athletic achievement: DiBiaso has led the Crimson Tide to a 12-0 record and a berth in the Division 1A Eastern Mass. Super Bowl against Lincoln-Sudbury (Sudbury, Mass.), scheduled for Dec. 3. He passed for 2,731 yards and a state-record 44 touchdowns through 12 games, completing 162-of-273 passes with just six interceptions. The state’s career leader with 103 touchdown passes, DiBiaso was The Boston Globe Division 1 Player of the Year and a Boston Herald All-Scholastic in 2010 when he threw a then-record 43 TD passes.

Academic excellence: DiBiaso has maintained a 3.63 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: DiBiaso has volunteered locally as a Big Brother/Big Sister mentor, a peer tutor and a youth football coach.

The window on the Gatorade State Football Player of the Year race is closing, and time is running out for student-athletes to state their POY case. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program's selection process.
