A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2012 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Shane Brostek


School: Hawaii Prep Academy (Kamuela, Hawaii)

Height: 6-foot-3
Weight: 283 pounds


Athletic achievement: Brostek captured the state championship in the shot put this spring with a throw of 55 feet, 7.25 inches at the state meet. The Most Outstanding Athlete at the Punahou Relays this past season, he also placed fourth in the discus at states, launching it 159 feet, nine inches. His shot put toss of 56 feet and discus throw of 168 feet, 11 inches at the Honolulu Marathon Invitational ranked as the Northwest’s No. 16 and No. 21 performances, respectively, among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.

Academic excellence: Also a football standout, Brostek has maintained a 3.71 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: He has donated his time as a youth football and track instructor.
