A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Jacob Thomson

THE BASICS

School: Holy Cross (Louisville, Ky.)
Grade: Junior
Height: 5-foot-9

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Thomson raced to the Class A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:55.83. The 2011 Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Class A Runner of the Year, he earned seventh place and was the fastest Kentucky runner at the Foot Locker South Regional championships, crossing the line in 14:55. The 2011 First Team All-State selection qualified for the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, where he finished 19th with a time of 15:42.

Academic excellence: Thomson has maintained a 3.70 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of his church community and his school’s environmental club, he has volunteered locally as a youth cross country coach.

The cross country season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Boys Cross Country Runners of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated. These state meet winners made a case in their respective classifications, but did they do enough on and off the course this past season to capture the prestigious statewide honor?

Connor Sheryak

POY Potential: Md. volleyball watch list

The Gatorade Player of the Year Program honors athletes who meet comprehensive and exacting criteria in high school sports. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNHS recruit rankings.

That being said, these are some of the early contenders who have entered the 2011-12 Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year conversation at some point …
