THE WINNER: Erik Harris

THE BASICS

School: Twin Falls (Idaho)
Grade: Senior
Event(s): Distance
Height: 5-foot-8
Weight: 133 pounds

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Harris won individual titles in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.86 and the 3200-meter run in 9:04.13, and earned second place in the 1600-meter run in 4:23.67 this spring, leading the Bruins to a fourth-place finish at the Class 4A state meet. A three-time First Team All-State honoree, he set a state record in the 3200, eclipsing the previous mark by two seconds. His time of 4:09.73 in the 1600 at the Chandler Rotary Invitational ranked as the nation’s No. 32 time among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.

Academic excellence: Harris has maintained a 3.98 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society and an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, he has served as the co-president of his school’s honor choir and has volunteered locally on behalf of his church youth group.

THE WINNER: Brittany Owens

THE BASICS

School: Borah (Boise, Idaho)
Grade: Senior
Event(s): Jumps/sprints
Height: 5-foot-11

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Owens won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, five-and-a-half inches and the triple jump (38 feet, 11 inches) this spring at the Class 5A state meet, leading the Lions to a seventh-place finish as a team. The 2010-11 Gatorade Idaho Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year, she became the first female in state history to eclipse 20 feet in the long jump, setting a state record with a leap of 20 feet and one-quarter inches at the YMCA Invitational in April.

Academic excellence: Owens has maintained a 3.36 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church community, she has volunteered locally on behalf of an area foster home and the YMCA. She is one of eight individuals to receive the Boise City Department of Arts and History’s 2012 Mayoral Award for Excellence in Art and History.

Position: Left-handed pitcher
Height: 5-foot-10

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: The state’s returning Gatorade Softball Player of the Year, Stangel posted a 22-2 record in 132.1 innings this past season with a 0.37 ERA and 218 strikeouts, leading the Timberwolves (22-2) to the Class 5A state championship game. She also batted .558 with 11 home runs and 59 RBI, producing a 1.117 slugging percentage and .606 on-base percentage. The three-time Inland Empire League MVP, she finished 25-0 with a 0.33 ERA and 283 strikeouts in 149 innings pitched as a sophomore, leading Lake City to the 2011 Class 5A state title.

Academic excellence: Stangel has maintained a 3.75 weighted GPA in the classroom and serves on her school’s student council.

Exemplary character: In addition to participating as a student-athlete blogger for ESPNHS this past season, she has volunteered as a youth softball instructor, on behalf of her church and in association with the National Honor Society.

Athletic achievement: Pavel led the Broncos to a 19-1 record and the Class 5A state championship this past season. He scored 10 goals and passed for six assists from his central defender position, leading a unit that allowed only 13 goals all season and posted 13 shutouts. A Class 5A First Team All-State selection, Pavel had two goals and an assist in Boise’s 3-0 win over Post Falls High in the state semifinals.

Athletic achievement: Heidemann led the Grizzlies to a 15-1-4 record and the Class 5A state championship this past season. She scored 14 goals and passed for 24 assists while being named the Class 5A Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year. A National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Far West Region selection, Heidemann recorded an assist in Rocky Mountain’s 1-0 state title-clinching win over Boise High in the state final. She concluded her prep soccer career with 42 goals and 64 assists.

Academic excellence: Heidemann has maintained a 3.95 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of Meridian’s elderly residents and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with her church youth group.
