THE WINNER: Vitor Nazareth

THE BASICS

School: Laramie (Wyo.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Midfielder
Height: 5-foot-7

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Nazareth led the Plainsmen to an 11-3-1 record entering the Class 4A state tournament against Rock Springs (Wyo.), scheduled to begin Thursday. He scored 10 goals and passed for 12 assists in the regular season. Nazareth was a First Team All-State selection in 2010 and 2011.

Academic excellence: Nazareth has maintained a B average in the classroom.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics and the Salvation Army.

The window on the Gatorade State Boys Soccer Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Wyoming Volleyball POY: Caitlin McInerney

A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Caitlin McInerney

THE BASICS

School: Laramie (Wyo.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Setter/middle blocker
Height: 6-foot-1

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: McInerney recorded 238 assists, 150 kills, 133 digs, 92 blocks and 27 service aces this past season, leading the Plainsmen (27-6) to the Class 4A state championship game. The Class 4A Player of the Year and a three-time First Team All-State selection as named by the Wyoming Coaches Association, she compiled a .290 hitting percentage and .440 kill percentage. McInerney clicked for 21 assists, 15 blocks, 12 digs and nine kills during a 3-1 loss to rival Sheridan (Wyo.) in the state title match.

Academic excellence: Also a basketball and track standout as well as an accomplished clarinetist and choir singer, McInerney has maintained a 3.95 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: In addition to participating locally in peer and youth leadership programs, McInerney has led fundraising efforts on behalf of Invisible Children and donated her time as a youth volleyball instructor.

POY Potential: Wyoming All-State volleyball

The Gatorade Player of the Year Program honors athletes who meet comprehensive and exacting criteria in high school sports. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNHS recruit rankings.

That being said, the state’s returning First Team All-State selections as named by the Wyoming Coaches Association are sure to enter the 2011-12 Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year conversation at some point. Here they are …
