Eye on POY: Hawaii girls soccer

The window on the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Lexi Felix

Senior goalkeeper, Iolani School (Honolulu, Hawaii)

2012 Team record: 18-1-3

2012 Team standing: Lost Division I state championship game

2012 Shutouts: 13

2012 Goals allowed: 9

2012 Saves: 130

Academics: B average

Collegiate destination: Augsburg College (Minneapolis, Minn.)

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Allowed just 0.4 goals per game this season. 2012 Honolulu Star Advertiser First Team All-State selection. Two-time Interscholastic League of Hawaii All-Star. Arizona Soccer Showcase Most Valuable Player.

Carly Neal

Senior forward/midfielder, Kamehameha School (Honolulu, Hawaii)

2012 Team record: 13-1-1

2012 Team standing: Division I state champions

2012 Goals: 13

2012 Assists: 12

Academics: A-minus average

Collegiate destination: University of Texas-San Antonio

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Averaged 1.6 points per game this season. 2012 Honolulu Star-Advertiser Player of the Year. 2012 Division I All-Tournament Team selection. Two-time Interscholastic League of Hawaii All-Star.

Make no mistake, the Gatorade State Girls Soccer Player of the Year race isn’t over yet. Time remains for one standout student-athlete among thousands to rise to the top of our list. Here are some more of many who’ve been in the conversation throughout the 2011-12 campaign.
