A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Maddy Doyle


School: Mercy (Farmington Hills, Mich.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Outside hitter
Height: 5-foot-9


Athletic achievement: Doyle recorded 717 kills, 501 digs, 121 assists, 107 blocks and 55 service aces this past season while posting a hitting percentage of .387 and leading the Marlins (65-4) to the Class A Regional Final. A two-time First Team All-State selection, she is the 2011 Michigan Miss Volleyball award winner.

Academic excellence: Doyle has maintained a 3.51 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A member of her school’s French Club and Science Club, Doyle has volunteered locally as a Catholic Youth Organization camp counselor and as a youth volleyball coach.

Eye on POY: Michigan volleyball

The window on the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year race is closing, and time is running out for student-athletes to state their POY case. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.
