THE BASICS

School: Musselman (Inwood, W.V.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Outside hitter
Height: 5-foot-10

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Allen recorded 472 kills, 322 digs, 86 service aces and 16 blocks this past season, leading the Applemen (39-9-1) to the Group AAA state final. The 2011 West Virginia Sports Writers Association Player of the Year, Allen is a three-time Group AAA First Team All-State selection and a three-time Player of the Year for the Martinsburg Journal.

Academic excellence: Allen has maintained a 3.34 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A member of the Musselman High student council and her local Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter, she has volunteered in her area as part of American Red Cross blood-donation drives and the Relay for Life.

The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. The Gatorade Player of the Year Program honors athletes who meet comprehensive and exacting criteria in high school sports. Candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNHS recruit rankings.

That being said, the state’s returning First Team All-State selections as named by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association are sure to enter the 2011-12 Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year conversation at some point. Here they are …
