A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Kadie Rolfzen

THE BASICS

School: Papillion-La Vista South (Papillion, Neb.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Outside hitter
Height: 6-foot-3

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Rolfzen led the Titans to a 41-0 record and a second consecutive Class A state championship this past season. The returning ESPNHS co-National Sophomore Player of the Year, she amassed 402 kills, 382 digs and 53 service aces while posting a .439 hitting percentage. Rolfzen recorded 15 kills and 15 digs in the 3-0 state title game sweep of Burke (Omaha, Neb.). The Most Valuable Player of the 2010 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior Olympic Championships, she is a member of the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team. Rolfzen compiled 405 kills, 280 digs and 46 service aces as a sophomore in 2010.

Academic excellence: Also a basketball standout, Rolfzen has maintained a 4.54 weighted GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A member of her school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter and the National Honor Society, Rolfzen has volunteered locally on behalf of her church community as well as the Special Olympics. She has also donated her time as an elementary school classroom assistant and as a youth athletic instructor.

The window on the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year race is closing, and time is running out for student-athletes to state their POY case. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

How she’s played herself into the State POY conversation: Produced 27 kills and 49 digs in the three Class A state tournament sweeps. Totaled 12 kills and 12 digs in the 3-0 state championship victory against Burke (Omaha, Neb.). Averaged 3.1 kills and 2.8 digs per set.
