A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Ty Hensley


School: Santa Fe (Edmond, Okla.)
Grade: Senior
Position: RHP/3B
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 220 pounds


Athletic achievement: Hensley posted a 10-0 record on the mound along with a 1.52 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 55.33 innings pitched this past season, leading the Wolves (30-9) to the Class 6A state semifinals. A 2011 Under Armour All-American Game participant and the No. 35 ranked prospect in the Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS, he also batted .447 with 10 home runs, 41 RBI and 27 runs scored with a 1.489 OPS.

Academic excellence: Hensley has maintained a 3.70 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally visiting patients at the Bethany Children’s Center pediatric hospital in addition to donating his time as a youth baseball coach and camp counselor.

The cross country season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Boys Cross Country Runners of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated. These state meet winners made a case in their respective classifications, but did they do enough on and off the course this past season to capture the prestigious statewide honor?
