THE WINNER: Brandon Sanders

THE BASICS

School: Dreher (Columbia, S.C.)
Grade: Senior
Event(s): Sprints
Height: 6-foot
Weight: 175 pounds

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: The 2008-09 and 2009-10 Gatorade Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Sanders won two individual state championships and two relays this spring, reclaiming the award he’d won twice previously and leading the Blue Devils to the Class 3A state championship. He won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.40 seconds, which ranked No. 47 nationally among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection. Sanders concluded his prep track career with 11 state titles.

Academic excellence: Sanders has maintained a B average in the classroom.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally at Richland Memorial Hospital, on behalf of Meals on Wheels and as part of an elementary school literacy-outreach program.

THE WINNER: Jalacy Green

THE BASICS

School: Colleton County (Walterboro, S.C.)
Grade: Senior
Event(s): Throws
Height: 5-foot-10

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Green won the shot put and discus at the Class 4A state meet this spring, leading the Cougars to ninth place as a team. The 2012 High School Sports Report 4A Female Athlete of the Year, she won the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 9 inches and the discus with a toss of 128-4. At the 4A state meet qualifiers, Green launched the shot put 45-5, which ranked No. 43 in the nation among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of her selection.

Academic excellence: Green has maintained a 3.46 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally as a certified nursing assistant.

THE BASICS

School: D.W. Daniel (Central, S.C.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Height: 6-foot-2

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Hoover posted a 16-4 record in 138.2 innings this past season, compiling a 0.50 ERA, 296 strikeouts and leading the Lions (25-7) to the Class 3A finals. An All-State selection and the High School Sports Report Class 3A co-Player of the Year, she also batted .475 with seven home runs and 34 runs scored. Hoover walked a state-record 59 times.

Academic excellence: Hoover has maintained a 3.69 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: President-elect of her class, she has volunteered locally delivering food to the needy and coaching youth softball players.

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Callahan posted a 7-1 record on the mound with one save, a 0.89 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 50 innings this past season, leading the Wildcats (17-4) to the second round of the Class AA Lower State tournament. A 2011 Under Armour All-American Game participant and the No. 57 ranked prospect in the Class of 2012 as rated by ESPNHS, he also batted .439 with five home runs, 32 RBI and 28 runs-scored, compiling a 1.356 OPS.

Academic excellence: Callahan has maintained a 3.93 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics as well as food and clothing drives for needy families.

Athletic achievement: The two-time returning Gatorade South Carolina Girls Soccer Player of the Year, DeVita recorded 44 goals and nine assists this past season, leading the Rams (16-9) to the Class 4A state quarterfinals. A two-time Class 4A First Team All-State selection, she recorded eight hat tricks and 14 multi-goal games as a senior. DeVita concluded her prep soccer career with a school-record 105 goals as well as 29 assists.

Academic excellence: DeVita has maintained a 4.30 weighted GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A member of her local Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter, she has volunteered locally as a youth soccer coach.

A four-time member of the All-State team, Dozier was thrice selected to the Elite Five by the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.
