A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in this winner based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011-12 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Will Coursen-Carr

THE BASICS

School: South Side (Fort Wayne, Ind.)
Grade: Senior
Position: LHP/1B
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 205 pounds

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Coursen-Carr led the Archers (18-9) to a berth in the Class 4A regional tournament, scheduled to begin Saturday. At the time of his selection, he owned an 8-1 record with one save, a 0.37 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 56 innings. A 2011 First Team All-State honoree, Coursen-Carr also batted .500 with three home runs and 15 RBI through 27 games.

Academic excellence: Coursen-Carr has maintained a 4.01 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of his church community, he has volunteered locally as a youth baseball coach and on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with the National Honor Society.
