A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade State Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

THE WINNER: Christina Daniels

THE BASICS

School: Tupelo (Miss.)
Grade: Freshman
Height: 5-foot-3

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Daniels raced to the Class 6A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:08.5, leading the Golden Wave to the state title as a team. She placed third at the Foot Locker South Regional freshmen championships in 19:11. Daniels captured second place at the 2010 Class 6A state meet as an eighth-grader and finished 11th in 2009 as a seventh-grader.

Academic excellence: Also an accomplished singer, Daniels has maintained a 4.00 GPA in the classroom in addition to attending a prestigious math and leadership camp at the Mississippi School of Math and Science.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally as a peer tutor, at an animal shelter, as part of holiday concerts for senior citizens and on behalf of her church’s youth group.

The cross country season may have concluded, but the search for Gatorade State Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated. These state meet competitors made a case in their respective classifications, but did they do enough on and off the course this past season to capture the prestigious statewide honor?

THE BASICS

School: Tupelo (Miss.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Middle blocker
Height: 6-foot

THE PILLARS

Athletic achievement: Farmer led the Golden Wave to a 31-1 record and the Class III state title this past season. She recorded 232 kills, 77 assists, 46 blocks and 30 service aces. Farmer was named to the Class III All-State Tournament team.

Academic excellence: Farmer has maintained an A-plus average in the classroom.

Exemplary character: An active member of her church youth group, Farmer has volunteered locally on behalf of Habitat for Humanity and youth volleyball programs.

Gatorade Player of the Year candidates are judged on athletic production and impact in the current season. Contenders also must demonstrate high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership. Senior status has no bearing on a candidate’s merit and selections are made independent of ESPNHS recruit rankings. That being said, success in the postseason will have a bearing on the selection process. Mississippi has already completed its state tournament, so our winner could be lurking among the All-State Tournament selections.
