A dedicated ESPNHS team managed the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year selection process, resulting in winners based on the program's three pillars: athletic production and impact in the 2011 season, high academic achievement and exemplary personal character.

Athletic achievement: Gray led the Golden Hawks to a 30-0 record and 61 consecutive victories along with a berth in the Class AAA state semifinals against North Hall (Gainesville, Ga.), scheduled for Friday. She averaged 32.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.0 steals, 3.4 assists and 2.4 blocks per game entering the postseason final four. The returning Class AAA Player of the Year as named by the Georgia Sportswriters Association, Gray shot 67.0 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from 3-point range (51-139) and 80.4 percent from the free throw line through 30 games. A First Team All-Tournament selection at this past summer’s Nike Nationals, she carried Washington County to the 2011 Class AAA state championship as a sophomore.

The window on the Gatorade State Girls Basketball Player of the Year race is closing, and the search for elite student-athletes is in full swing. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Here are two top candidates who meet the basic award criteria as determined by our ESPNHS team that administers the program’s selection process.

Totaled 29 points, nine steals and six rebounds in an 85-36 Class AAAAA state tournament first-round blowout of Archer (Lawrenceville, Ga.). Shooting 52 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the free throw line. No. 3 ranked recruit in Class of 2013 as rated by ESPNHS. Member of USA Basketball’s 2010 Women’s U18 National Team and 2011 Women’s U19 World Championship Team; 2011 Miss Georgia Basketball selection as named by the Georgia Sports Writers Association. 2011 Second Team All-American as named by USA Today. 2010 ESPNHS National Freshman of the Year. 2010 Class 5A Player of the Year as named by the GSWA. 2010 and 2011 Class AAAAA state champion.
