High-SchoolTexas: Armando Arevalo

After games on Saturday, April 21

They won't meet in the playoffs, but fans got their dream matchup last week when Calallen and CC Carroll met in a battle of the top teams in Corpus Christi and the state.

This time, Calallen of Class 4A prevailed against CC Carroll of Class 5A by the count of 7-1, thanks to a strong pitching performance from Armando Arevalo, who took a no-hitter into the seventh and is 7-0 on the season. The win could have future rankings implications should the two end up winning state titles.

Nationally, the outcome moved Calallen back into the top 10 at No. 7 in the POWERADE FAB 50, which includes six teams from the Lone Star State.

Here are this week's rankings (last week's rankings in parentheses):

1. Calallen (Corpus Christi) 28-1 (3)
Wildcats picked up a huge win against previous No. 1 CC Carroll, thanks to Armando Arevalo's dominance on the mound during a 7-1 win.

2. Carroll (Corpus Christi) 22-3 (1)
Tigers lost their hold of the top spot after a 7-1 loss to Calallen. The result could have future implications should these two vie for No. 1 in the final rankings.

3. Deer Park 19-1 (4)
Deers have made the state and nation take notice with their consistent play.

After games on Monday, March 6.

We all knew Corpus Christi Carroll was good. The Tigers won the Class 5A title two years ago and boast a wealth of experienced stars this season. But after four games, the Tigers look downright unstoppable.

Behind star Courtney Hawkins (five home runs and 16 RBIs), the Tigers have scored at least 10 runs during their 4-0 start, placing them third in the first POWERADE FAB 50 regular season rankings.

Also impressive has been Austin Westlake, which has gone unbeaten through its first 12 games to vault into the national top 15.

Here are this week's rankings (preseason rankings in parentheses):

1. Carroll (Corpus Christi) 4-0 (1)
The Tigers have lit up the scoreboard, scoring 10 or more runs in their first four games. Courtney Hawkins already has three HRs and eight RBIs.

2. Calallen (Corpus Christi) 7-0 (2)
Wildcats have looked solid on the mound and defense, giving up five or more runs just once in their seven-game win streak to open the season. Ace Armando Arevalo is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA.

3. Westlake (Austin) 11-0-1 (NR)
Chaparrals have surged up the rankings behind their unbeaten start. In their latest win against Belton, Hayden Ross had three doubles. Their tie came in a 5-5 contest against Lewisville.
