The NJSIAA New Jersey Meet of Champions, postponed yesterday until today because of a storm, was postponed a second time this morning. The meet will now take place Monday, June 11th at 5 p.m. at Lombardi Field, Carl Sandburg Middle School, in Old Bridge.
The meet began Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET with a threat of storms in the area, and after one event a storm erupted with lightning, causing NJSIAA officials to stop the meet. There was reportedly a 27-minute delay before the meet was called off for the day. The NJSIAA has given no reason on its web site for the second postponement, but it is thought that a shaky forecast tonight and the difficulty of many teams and individuals to attend due to graduation ceremonies is a significant factor.
Last year, the association was criticized when it halted the Meet of Champions during the boys 3,200 meters due to lightning in the area as Joe Rosa was about to complete a possible sub-8:40 performance.
