Cushing was absolutely correct when he said most players coming off a torn ACL don't get this kind of deal. According to his contract documents, the Houston Texans showed just how much faith they have in Cushing's health and recovery with this contract, giving him a deal with guaranteed base salaries through 2015.
We already knew the deal included a $9 million signing bonus and $21 million in guarantees overall. It also has a $6 million option bonus, with 2019 an option year that has to be picked up by 2014.
His base salaries of $2 million in 2014 and $4 million in 2015 are guaranteed. The 2014 base is guaranteed for skill, injury and cap, which means if they release him for any reason he still gets the guaranteed base. The 2015 base is only guaranteed for injury, which shows faith in his ability to stay healthy.
Cushing's base goes up to $5 million in 2016, but it increases to $6 million if the Texans don't pick up the option year. And each year of the deal he has a per-game roster bonus that totals $1.25 million.
The cap numbers are $4.449 million this year, $5.390 million next year, $8.25 million in 2015, $9.25 million in 2016, $9.75 million in 2017, $9.7 million in 2018, and $9.5 million in 2019.
