Dubious NFL first on line for Matt Schaub
By Tania Ganguli
SAN FRANCISCO -- Last weekend after the Texans' 23-20 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Elias Sports Bureau checked in with our stats folks to tell us that in the past 20 years, four quarterbacks have thrown pick-sixes in three consecutive games: Peyton Manning, John Elway, Ty Detmer and Matt Schaub, whose streak is still active.
Schaub's most recent pick-six sparked a firestorm. Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, perhaps the best cornerback in the NFL, stepped in front of Texans tight end Owen Daniels, caught the ball, returned it for a touchdown and mimed digging a grave. Schaub's jersey was burned, a restaurant chalked a sign about a "pick-six" burger special and fans called for his departure.
Schaub said Wednesday that tuning out the noise is a key to moving on.
He finds himself on the precipice of history tonight -- and not in a good way.
ESPN Stats & Information checked in with Elias today for this stat: Since the merger in 1970, no quarterback has ever thrown a pick-six in four consecutive games.
