RTC: Signing day doesn't foretell NFL future

By Tania Ganguli

Reading the coverage of the Houston Texans...

National Signing Day is as good a time as any to remind everyone that today might mean nothing for some future NFL stars. Mike Huguenin of NFL.com notes that Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was among players who went from walk-on to NFL star. Also on the list are Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews and Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor.

Russ Lande of Sports On Earth takes a stab at playing GM for a day for the Houston Texans. Although Lande's piece got a lot of traction for a note in it that said the Texans are leaning toward UCF's Blake Bortles or Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, there's a lot more to this piece. Lande examines how the Texans solve the problems of finding a pass-rusher other than Watt, finding a quarterback for the future, fixing the offensive line and transitioning to Romeo Crennel's brand of 3-4 defense from Wade Phillips' style. It's an excellent point we've discussed here, too. Though Phillips and Crennel both run a 3-4, they aren't alike.

Meanwhile, Len Pasquarelli of the National Football Post has a source saying Texans coach Bill O'Brien isn't nearly as enamored with Bortles as many think he is. Use your search function on this long notes column. Pasquarelli also says Texans quarterback Matt Schaub could find a home with the Oakland Raiders if/when the Texans release him.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today examines questions to answer for this NFL offseason, including what the Texans might do with the first overall pick.
