Number of QBs for training camp not set

By Tania Ganguli

The thus far wide open competition for quarterback could be reaching a critical moment in the next few weeks.

Or it might not be.

That will depend on whether Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien decides he wants three or four quarterbacks at training camp, which begins in about a month and a half.

"Any time you have four, I don't think you can really divide the reps," O'Brien said today. "You can basically have three get reps in practice. That's probably not the easiest thing for those guys. Three out of four are getting reps. I'm not sure. We haven't really talked about the roster yet. Everything we do is in the best interest of the team."

Those reps are being divided as best as they can be between Case Keenum, T.J. Yates, free agent acquisition Ryan Fitzpatrick and fourth-round draft pick Tom Savage. Given that the Texans gave $4 million guaranteed to Fitzpatrick and drafted Savage to develop, I'd be surprised if one of those players got released, which means it could come down to Keenum or Yates if O'Brien decides he only wants to take three quarterbacks to camp.

O'Brien wanted to make sure that reporters and fans alike knew one thing:

"These guys have worked extremely hard," he said. "They've all had really good moments. They're very competitive. They've all been in the building seven days a week studying … they're really competing and really trying to help the team and I think improved every week."
