At some point when he’s at home -- and not on Twitter -- wondering why his phone still isn’t ringing with teams calling, Chris Rainey will realize why his chances to play in the NFL are running out.
His talent isn’t an issue. It’s his maturity that’s the problem. That’s why he was on Twitter instead of taking carries out of the backfield and returning kicks for the Indianapolis Colts against the New York Jets on Thursday night.
I was told shortly after the Colts released Rainey for a violation of team rules that he has a long way to go with his maturity.
That's not surprising.
Rainey showed his physical immaturity when he was arrested and charged with a count of simple battery while with the Pittsburgh Steelers in January 2013. He showed his mental immaturity when he went on a Twitter rant, which he later deleted, during the Colts’ game Thursday.
"Yea I'm piss watching the colts game when I should be out there, too. Even tho i didn't break no f----- team rules, not even," Rainey tweeted.
Rainey tweeted again several minutes later after Daniel "Boom" Herron scored a touchdown.
"Nice TD Boom even tho u was in the hallway with me that nite when we was horsing around with the fire extinguisher. Man up like I did," Rainey tweeted.
The Colts shied away from going into details of what Rainey did to get released, but he told on himself and he threw Herron under the bus in the process.
Players, especially the Colts, often say they like to keep dirty laundry among themselves. Rainey completely went against that unwritten rule. He already faces a challenge to get signed by another team because of his history. It may be even tougher for Rainey to get his teammates -- if that chance comes again -- to trust him because of what he did to Herron.
Rainey should be upset that he had to watch the Colts' game on television. He was the front-runner to be the Colts’ third running back and the team’s return specialist. It was just days prior to his release that coach Chuck Pagano raved about Rainey.
“He’s going to help us in the return game and that’s going to give him a chance to make this team,” Pagano said on July 26.
That’s not the case the anymore because Rainey can’t stay out of trouble.
