Mathis is having a better season statistically -- he’s in the running for Defensive Player of the Year and is basically a lock to make the Pro Team -- than Luck, but as far as being more valuable to a team, I’m going with the quarterback.
Losing Mathis just means Luck would be required to do more, which he has no problem doing, and the rest of the defense will have to step up.
The same can’t be the same if the Colts lost Luck for a period of time.
Luck’s improved his completion percentage from 54.1 percent as a rookie to 59.5 this season. He’s cut his interceptions in half from 18 to nine. Luck’s thrown for 834 fewer yards and attempted 94 fewer passes from his rookie season because of the team’s emphasis on the run game.
