Mathis wins second player of month award

By Mike Wells

INDIANAPOLIS -- The list of honors continue to pile up for Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis.

Mathis
In Week 5, he became the 30th player in league history to reach 100 career sacks. He set the team’s single-season and career sack records. And now he’s been named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for the second time.

He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for December after recording 19 tackles (15 solo), 5.0 sacks and four forced fumbles. The five sacks led the AFC.

Mathis is the first Colt to win AFC Player of the Month twice in a single season since kicker Mike Vanderjagt won it three straight months in 2003.

Mathis led the league with 19.5 sacks, and has a legitimate shot at winning Defensive Player of the Year.

“There’s no question,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. “I’d be shocked if he didn’t receive that reward. Robert, doesn’t he really care? If you know Robert like we all know Robert, he wants to win (Saturday against Kansas City) and he wants to be in New York (for the Super Bowl) in February. That’s his No. 1 goal. Hats off to Robert, congratulations to him for winning AFC Player of the Month.”
