New daughter helps Mathis with suspension

By Mike Wells

ANDERSON, Ind. -- The fact that he will miss the first four games of the season because of a suspension has already hit home for Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis.

And anytime he thinks about not playing games against Denver, Philadelphia, Jacksonville and Tennessee in the first four weeks of the season, Mathis just has to pick up his bundle of joy, and like any other parent, a smile comes on his face.

Mathis and his wife, Brandi, became parents to a daughter, Brielle Emma-Rose Mathis, on July 19.

“I kiss my baby and wait for my turn,” Mathis said when he thinks about his suspension.

Mathis was suspended by the NFL in May for four games for violating the league’s ban on performance-enhancing substances. Clomid, which Mathis took to help his wife get pregnant, is on the league’s list of banned substances.

“Oh, she's the apple of my eye,” Mathis said about Brielle. “I don't think I could love anything more than being a father. Well except being a husband. But I’m very happy, very beautiful and I’m just a happy father.”
